AI answers for electricians
People asking AI for an electrician want reassurance as much as availability: qualified, registered, and able to sign off the work. Assistants look for that in scheme registers, trade directories and electricians' own sites, so contractors who state their registrations and specialisms plainly, from EV chargers to rewires, give the AI something specific to recommend.
What customers ask AI
Typical questions, in customers' own words. None of them names a business, which is the point: whoever the answer names is who the customer calls.
“Can you recommend an NICEIC-registered electrician in Manchester for a full rewire?”
“Who installs home EV chargers near Reading, and roughly how much does it cost?”
“Need an electrician in Phoenix to add outlets and a ceiling fan this week. Who's good?”
“Which electricians in Glasgow do EICR certificates for landlords?”
“Licensed electrician in Columbus for a panel upgrade, any recommendations?”
Where answers about electricians can come from
AI assistants search the web before answering, and cite what they read. These sites list or review electricians and are among the pages those answers can draw on. Which ones the answers in your town actually cite differs by place and engine; a scan shows yours.
| Site | Where | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| NICEIC (external site) | UK | A competent person scheme register; customers search it to check an electrician can self-certify notifiable work. |
| NAPIT (external site) | UK | The other main competent person scheme for electricians, with its own find-a-member search. |
| Checkatrade | UK | UK directory of vetted trades, with reviews and service areas. |
| Rated People (external site) | UK | A UK job-matching site where homeowners compare tradespeople by reviews. |
| Angi | US | US home-services marketplace with electrician profiles and reviews. |
| Thumbtack (external site) | US | US marketplace where customers request quotes; profiles show reviews and prices. |
| Yelp | US | US review site with pages for local electricians. |
Fixes for electricians
No one outside the AI companies knows exactly how they choose names. These fixes put accurate, specific information where assistants read, which is the part you control. Mark up your site with the Electrician schema type (external site) as well; our guide to LocalBusiness schema in plain English shows how.
State your scheme or licence in text
In England and Wales, name your competent person scheme (NICEIC, NAPIT or another listed by the government) and your registration number on your site. In the US, show your state electrical licence number. Customers ask for 'registered' and 'licensed', and the assistant needs to read it somewhere.
Give EV chargers their own page
EV charger installation is asked about as its own question, often with cost and brand in it. A page naming the chargers you fit, the towns you cover and whether you handle any grant paperwork matches those questions directly.
Separate domestic, landlord and commercial work
Landlord certificates (EICRs in the UK), commercial fit-outs and household jobs are different questions from different customers. A short page for each makes it clear which you do.
Use the Electrician schema type
Mark up your homepage with the Electrician type from schema.org, with the same name, address, phone and hours as your Google Business Profile.
Electricians: questions and answers
Do AI assistants check whether an electrician is registered?
They don't check registers the way an inspector would. They repeat what the pages they read say. If your registration is listed on the scheme's public register and stated on your site, an assistant can pass that on when a customer asks for a registered electrician.
Why does AI recommend electricians from the next town?
Your service area may not be written anywhere the assistant reads. List the towns you cover on your site and in your Google Business Profile, and make sure your directory profiles show the same area.
Will reviews mentioning specific jobs help?
Reviews that mention the job and the place ('rewired our house in Didsbury') give an assistant concrete text to match against a customer's question. You can't write them yourself, but you can ask happy customers to say what you did.
How is this different from ranking in Google Maps?
Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode sit on top of Google Search, so the same groundwork helps. But AI answers usually name only a few businesses, and ChatGPT and Perplexity draw on different sources. Measuring each engine separately shows where you're strong and where you're missing.
