AI answers for plumbers

Plumbing questions to AI are usually urgent and local: a leak tonight, a boiler that won't fire, a quote for a bathroom. Assistants answer by searching trade directories, review sites and plumbers' own websites, so the plumbers named are the ones whose availability, area and accreditation are written down clearly and consistently in those places.

What customers ask AI

Typical questions, in customers' own words. None of them names a business, which is the point: whoever the answer names is who the customer calls.

  • “Who's a reliable emergency plumber in Leeds who can come out tonight?”

  • “My boiler is showing an error code and there's no hot water. Who can fix it in Bristol tomorrow?”

  • “How much should a plumber charge to fix a leaking pipe under the sink in Austin?”

  • “Best-rated plumber near Headingley for a full bathroom refit?”

  • “Is there a plumber in Denver that does water heater replacement on weekends?”

Where answers about plumbers can come from

AI assistants search the web before answering, and cite what they read. These sites list or review plumbers and are among the pages those answers can draw on. Which ones the answers in your town actually cite differs by place and engine; a scan shows yours.

Fixes for plumbers

No one outside the AI companies knows exactly how they choose names. These fixes put accurate, specific information where assistants read, which is the part you control. Mark up your site with the Plumber schema type (external site) as well; our guide to LocalBusiness schema in plain English shows how.

  1. Write your emergency hours as text

Say on your site, in plain words, whether you take emergency call-outs, on which days and until when, and put the same hours in your Google Business Profile. Many plumbing questions are urgent, and an assistant can't recommend you for 'tonight' if nothing says you work tonight.

  2. Show your registration where it can be read

In the UK, put your Gas Safe registration number on your site as text (not only in a logo image). In the US, show your state plumbing licence number where your state issues one. Customers ask assistants for 'licensed' and 'registered' plumbers.

  3. One page per kind of job

Separate short pages for boilers, leaks, drains, bathrooms and water heaters, each naming the towns you cover, match the specific questions customers ask far better than one 'all plumbing work' page.

  4. Match your directory categories

Check you're listed as a plumber (and heating engineer, if you do boilers) on the directories that serve your area, with the same name, phone number and service area as your Google Business Profile.

  5. Answer the price question honestly

A short FAQ saying how you charge (call-out fee, hourly rate or fixed quotes) gives assistants something to quote when customers ask what a job should cost.

Plumbers: questions and answers

Why does ChatGPT recommend a national plumbing chain instead of me?

Chains have pages in many directories and articles that name them for every town, so they turn up in the pages an assistant searches. A local plumber can beat that on the specifics: a page that names your towns and services, consistent listings on the directories cited in your area, and reviews that mention the job and the place.

Does being Gas Safe registered help me appear in AI answers?

Nobody outside the AI companies can say how much any one signal counts. What is clear is that customers ask for registered engineers, and an assistant can only repeat that you're registered if it's written somewhere it reads. Put your registration number on your site as text and keep your register entry current.

Should I pay for a premium directory listing to appear in AI answers?

Look before you pay. A free scan shows which sites the AI answers in your area actually cite. If a directory never appears in those citations, a premium listing there is unlikely to change what AI says about you.

How often do AI answers about plumbers change?

Often. The same question can return a different shortlist from one ask to the next, which is why we measure each question several times a week and only report a change when it's bigger than that normal variation.
